The Peace Project

Core Shelters

Bantayan Island, Philippines

Commissioned by The Peace Project in Culver City, Ca; this project consisted of forty shelters to house victims of Super Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The project was located on a remote island with limited local resources. With the exception of concrete and corrugated metal roofing, all construction supplies were shipped in from donors in the USA. The scope of work involved the design of a simple but strong structure that could be easily quantified and efficiently built. Construction management services included travel to the island to assist the community with the construction of their new homes. An eight person crew of community members was able to assemble two structures a day. The final shelter was completed on the one year anniversary of the typhoon.
