Juniper Modern

Pioneertown, California

Situated on a gently rolling five acre parcel in the Black Lava Butte area of Pioneertown, this 1,300sf modern cabin will serve as a weekend retreat where vast openness and quiet solitude are celebrated. Nestled into a small ridge, the building is accessed through a pathway that is carved through the site. By entering the house, you transition from its subtle and unassuming public side to its open and airy private side. Large quantities of southern windows take advantage of nearby boulder and distant mesa views. At 4,700' elevation, the high desert environment brings vast temperature swings that dictate the use of passive heating and cooling design strategies. These strategies help to minimize the home’s reliance on off-grid utilities.
