Boulder Cove
Pioneertown, California
Named for the dramatic natural features of its site, our Boulder Cove house responds to the challenges of its dramatic hillside topography. With a majority of the property extending into the hillside, there was very little buildable area to work with. In addition, the shape of the cove was carved out by an active natural drainage course that cut through the center of the desired building location. The most desirable views are located to the south of the property, gazing out at the hillside that climbs high above the home. These dramatic hillside views, while beautiful, can feel overbearing when viewed from a low vantage point.
The solution, a home that gently steps in tune with the natural contours of the site. When viewed from above, the shape of the home frames and protects a natural courtyard that feels like an extension of the interior spaces. The ‘public’ space of the great room is grounded on the site by massive rock walls that extend out into the hillside to create sunken, shaded patios. The ‘private’ bedroom wing is elevated above the site to allow for natural drainage underneath the home. The elevated rooms enjoy a less confined interaction with the uphill views, looking out to the landscape instead of looking up.
